Asphalt driveways are built in layers. The estimate job is calculating area, choosing thickness, then converting to tons.
Measure the Driveway
Measure the length and width of the paved surface, accounting for curves by splitting the shape into rectangles or taking an average width.

Convert to Tonnage
Asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot (approximately 110-115 lb per sq ft per 1" of thickness).
Tons ≈ (area × thickness_in × 0.145)Contractors usually quote by the ton. Add the base course and any shoulders to the total area before converting.
Plan the Base
- A compacted gravel base (typically 4-6 in) keeps the asphalt stable.
- Account for the base material in the same volume math.
- Drainage should slope the final surface away from structures.
