Flooring estimates come down to accurate room area plus a realistic waste allowance for cuts and layout.
Measure the Room
Measure the longest length and width, including doorways and alcoves. Multiply to get the square footage of each area, then add them together.

Order in the Pricing Unit
Most flooring is sold per square foot or per carton. Convert your total (area × waste) into the unit the supplier uses so you order whole cartons or bundles.
Check Directions and Subfloor
- Lay planks perpendicular to the floor joists for stability.
- Allow for expansion gaps around the perimeter.
- Verify the subfloor is flat before ordering.
- Pad thickness matters for floating floors — confirm it suits the plank you chose.
