Brick Guide
Figuring out how many bricks a project needs, plus the mortar to lay them, is a two-step estimate that is easy once you know the basics.
Brick Size and Coverage
Most bricks are around 8 × 3.5 × 2.25 in, but the exact unit size you buy drives the count. Measure the physical brick for best accuracy.
Bricks per sq ft ≈ 144 ÷ (brick length + joint width) ÷ (brick height + joint width)A standard modular brick with 3/8" joints works out to roughly 6.5-7 bricks per square foot of wall face.
Walls vs Paving
- For veneer walls, count one brick-thick and one face area.
- For cavity or double walls, multiply by the number of wythes.
- For paving, brick thickness and the laying pattern change the count.
Add Wastage and Cut Bricks
- Add 5-10% for cutting, breakage and return corners.
- English and Flemish bonds cut more bricks than running bond.
- Order an extra few bricks so the color batch matches.
Mortar Estimate
Mortar is measured by the cubic foot of joint space. A typical brick wall uses about 0.3 cu ft of mortar per 100 bricks for standard joints — check the mortar calculator for bag counts at your mix ratio.
