Deck Staining Guide
Stain coverage is all about surface area and coats — get those right and you won't run out halfway across the deck.
Measure the Surface
Stain covers the top of the boards. Measure length × width of the deck surface; if you are staining railing or spindles, estimate those surfaces separately.

Coverage depends on the product and the wood. Typical coverage sits around 200-300 sq ft per gallon per coat for water-based stains, and varies for oils and solids.
Plan the Coats
- Most decks need two coats to protect properly.
- Multiply area by the number of coats, then divide by coverage per gallon.
- Add 10% for missed spots, trim and touch-ups.
Match the Wood Age
New, bare wood soaks in more than a previously sealed deck. Older wood may need a cleaner and one fewer coat — adjust quantity when you test on a hidden board.
