Tile Patterns Guide

The layout you choose changes how much tile you buy, because every pattern wastes a different amount to cuts.

Straight (Grid) Layout

  • Lines run square with the room.
  • Simplest cutting; waste is usually the lowest.
  • Add 5-7% for cuts and breakage.

Diagonal Layout

Tiles are rotated 45°. Every tile along the edges is cut, so waste jumps to around 10-12%.

Brick / Offset and Herringbone

Staggered rows (brick bond) waste 10% typically. Herringbone and chevron are pattern-heavy layouts that can waste 12-15% because of many angled cuts.

Choose for the Room

  • Straight layouts suit simple, rectangular rooms.
  • Diagonal and herringbone can make small rooms feel larger.
  • Complex patterns raise labor and waste — budget for both.
